Be Comfortable!

The house is heated and cooled with a Trane heat pump.  The thermostat is on the main floor on the wall in the hallway.

On the thermostat, you will see that there is a feature where you can select auto heating and cooling (far left on the image).  This feature keeps the house in a 3-degree range starting heating or cool as needed, however we have found it's hard to keep the basement comfortable with this feature.

INSTEAD, we recommend selecting either the heating or cooling button (second or third on the image) and then click the temperature to the degree you want it to be.  Vents in the basement are located in the ceiling and can be opened or closed to adjust to individual needs.  In the summer, you may need to close the basement vents to keep the basement from being too cold.  In the winter, you may need to open the basement vents to ensure the basement is warm.

The house is very efficient so adjust to the degree you would like and give it around 15 to 20 minutes to adjust.

Fireplace Information

A remote operates the fireplace and is located on the wall just left of the fireplace.  With the remote, you can turn the fireplace on/off, set temperature and fan speed.  If you run the fireplace, it will make the basement cooler as then the furnace for the whole house will not run as much.

Baker's Bakery for a great snack or meal

Located right on main street of Custer, Baker's Bakery is in a class of it's own with homemade baked goods and buns.  From full breakfast to amazing donuts (my favorite is the maple), it's worth a stop.  If your later in the day, any sandwich on their delicious buns will hit the mark!

Grab a bite while exploring the park

Custer State Park has a variety of dining options from a more formal dining room to a casual bite in a great atmosphere.  One of our favorites is to dine at the Blue Bell Lodge.  Just the right mix of casual and authentic!

Life is short - eat dessert first

The purple pie place is the cutest and most delicious stop in Custer.  Choose from a wide pie offering, something for everyone.   If you are full when you go by - pop in and get one to go to enjoy back at the lodge!

Hike and/or swim at Sylvan Lake

There are a number of great hikes in the area ranging from mild to more aggressive. near Sylvan Lake.  If you're up for a challenge, hike Black Elk Peak (sometimes known as Harney Peak) which is the highest point in South Dakota.  Be sure to pack your swimming gear as the area is beautiful and perfect for a swim.  It's free and it's beautiful!

Watch for the Fluffy Cow

When our family was visiting Hill City, we had a range of ages along with activity levels so we were looking for something everyone would enjoy.  The Buffalo Safari hit the mark!  They were able to safely take us near the Buffalo and teach us about the area, but we could talk and have fun along the way.

The Wildlife Loop

Every pass through the wildlife loop is a new adventure in what you will see and where.  It's always a good idea to stop at the Custer State Park visitor center to get a heads up on where the animals are currently roaming so you will not miss a thing.
